Srebarna Nature Reserve

The Srebarna-lake lies on the coast of the Danube between the 393rd and the 391st kilometers, approximately 18 kilometers from the town of Silistra. The area of the lake is 6 660 ha and it was formed seismically. The uniqueness of the lake lies in its constantly changing water level. When the water level rises, larger and smaller pieces of reedbeds break off the coast developing floating islands. These islands are never flooded, and at the same time are hard to access by predators, therefore they are an ideal nesting place for birds. The Reserve was mostly honored when the 7th Ordinary Session of the World Heritage Commitee admitted it on its list of cultural and natural world heritages in 1983 as a natural ecosystem that provides a genuine habitat for the Dalmatian pelican.

Tourism in Srebarna Nature Reserve

Educational trails are developed in the protected area on the hills spreading eastward, westward and southward for tourists who like nature and would like to discover the beauties of the region. Wonderful views open up for hikers from the lookouts as they walk along the trails. There are three tour routes developed for visiitors with appropriate infrastructure. Two of them are hiking trails and one of them leads to fishing spots. Arbors with benches are placed along the educational trails overlooking the lake. There are lookouts, toilets and nets for the fishermen as well.

The educational trails

The eastern trail starts from Fazanárijata and it goes along the eastern side of the lake until the lock. The western trail, which starts by the Museum of Natural Sciences goes along the western road for fire-protection and the Todoránka hill, ends by the banks of the Danube. Kodža hill, which is on the northeastern side of Srebarna offers the best view on the pelican colonies.
